A new study, conducted by Queen’s University in Belfast, Ireland shows that a specific amount of vitamins and other nutrients can slow down the rate of sight loss in AMD (age-related macular degeneration). AMD is a major cause of blindness in the elderly that destroys sharp, central vision which is needed for seeing objects clearly and for common daily tasks such as driving and reading.
The study discovered that Vitamin C and E, zinc as well as lutein and zeaxanthin could not only slow degeneration to the given 400 senior citizens in the study, but also lead to improved sight and sharper vision.
“Late AMD causes severe sight loss and has a huge economic impact both in terms of the effects of sight loss itself and in terms of the expensive treatments that are needed to deal with the condition,” says Professor Chakravarthy, a consultant ophthalmic surgeon in Belfast.
“An economic analysis based upon losses to the gross domestic product suggests that ARMD has approximately a $30 billion annual negative impact,” according to Dr. Gary Brown of the Center for Value-Based Medicine in Pennsylvania.
This can also help when it comes to your health insurance. Many Medicare insurance plans may not cover some of the procedures that deal with AMD.
